About 50 people came to a community forum April 22 at Bailey’s Elementary School to learn more about a huge safety problem in Mason District—accidents involving pedestrians.
Officer Michael Greene of the Mason Police District said there have been four pedestrian-related traffic accidents so far in 2014. That compares to 22 in 2013, 44 in 2012, and 27 in 2011.
The most troublesome spots for pedestrians in Mason District are Route 236 at Backlick Road in Annandale, Route 236 at Beauregard Street in Lincolnia, Columbia Pike at Lacy Boulevard in Bailey’s Crossroads, and the overpass at Route 50 and Route 7 in Seven Corners.
Most pedestrians are at risk when wearing dark clothing at night, jaywalking, intoxicated, or have a physical handicap, Greene said. Pedestrian accidents are the fifth leading cause of injury-related death in the United States for children and teens ages 5 to 19.
The forum was presented by the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services in partnership with the Annandale Roundtable, Korean American Association of Virginia, Legal Aid Justice Center, and Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations.
