Annandale videographer Bob Kovacs not only works behind the camera, capturing many performances from Mason District Starlight by Spotlight concerts throughout the summer, he’s a talented musician, too.
The video below is from a lunchtime concert of country, pop, and novelty songs Kovacs presented Aug. 22 at the Shepherd’s Center of Annandale-Springfield, a nonprofit, interfaith organization serving seniors.
The song, “Marie Laveaux,” was written by Shel Silverstein and was a hit for Bobby Bare in 1974. There was an actual person named Marie Laveau—she was a voodoo queen in Louisiana—“but leave it to Shel Silverstein to find the humor,” Kovacs says. “I had a great time performing for the Shepherd’s Center crowd, which was at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Ravensworth Road in Annandale.”
Kovacs doesn’t confine his video recordings to Mason. He recently uploaded a couple of performances to his Annandale Arts You Tube channel, including singer/songwriter Cheryl Wheeler’s “Pop Tarts and Spam,” about an actual cruise ship incident, from an Aug. 22 show at Nottoway Park in Vienna, and the Tone Ranger’s rendition of the old David Cassidy song, “I Think I Love You,” from the A Capella Festival July 27 at Lubber Run Park in Arlington.
