Prepare for construction delays due to work on Gallows Road bridge over Route 50

Expect some intermittent delays and nighttime closures at the Route 50/Gallows Road intersection over the next year as the Virginia Department of Transportation begins phase 2 of its project to “rehabilitate” the overpass.

The project will include concrete and steel beam repairs, bearing replacement, joint closures, and deck resurfacing. The total cost of the project is $5.1 million.

According to VDOT, the work needs to be done because “the substructure is in poor condition due to significant concrete spalling on the pier cap and columns at both ends of the pier.” The overpass was built in 1985.

Gallows Road averages 39,000 vehicles a day, and Route 50 averages 41,000 vehicles a day in the area of the interchange.

Phase I, which was completed in July 2016, consisted of repairs to the bridge piers. Phase 2 construction will start with minor preliminary work. Major impact work will begin in mid to late spring.

At that point, VDOT says, “motorists can expect intermittent daytime single-lane closures during off-peak hours on Route 50 and Gallows Road.” There will also be “nighttime multiple-lane closures during off-peak hours” on both roads and the closure of two or more of the interchange ramps.

At least one lane of traffic will be open at all times on both Route 50 and Gallows Road, VDOT says, and access will be provided at all times to properties within the project limits.
