Two people were hospitalized following a three-alarm fire at the Morningside Apartments on Beauregard Street in the Lincolnia area Friday afternoon.

One of the injured adults has a “moderate injury,” and the other adult in the hospital has a “non-life-threatening injury,” which is considered more serious, said  Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Battalion Chief Robert Zoldos. A firefighter also suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

The fire started in a unit on the top floor. When firefighters arrived, at about 3:30 p.m., they saw flames on the roof. People were evacuated from two apartments that are considered uninhabitable, due to water damage and the collapse of the ceiling. Zoldos called it “pretty impressive” that only two apartments were severely damaged.

Raymond, a resident of the basement-level unit directly below where the fire started who was standing across the street watching the firefighters, was surprised to find emergency vehicles lining Beauregard Street when he got home from work. He said he can’t get back into his apartment and will spend the night in a hotel.

Fire units from the Edsall Road, Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads, Alexandria, and Merrifield stations responded. The Fire Department hasn’t yet determined the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.

There was a major fire at Morningside two years ago.
