An off-duty deputy with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office fatally shot a man reportedly acting in a threatening manner Aug. 15 at a bus stop out Inova Fairfax Hospital.
The Fairfax County Police Department reported the man’s “condition was initially said to be non-life-threatening.” But the Washington Post later announced the the man had died. Neither the man shot nor the deputy have been identified.
According to the FCPD, a security staff member with Inova called the police shortly before 10 p.m. to report that “a suspicious man with some sort of edged weapon was seen at a bus stop outside the green garage on the hospital campus.”
When the sheriff’s deputy, who was in uniform and on assignment at the hospital, responded to the incident, the suspect “threatened the deputy with an unidentified object, prompting the deputy to discharge his service weapon, striking the man.”
Three Fairfax County police officers arrived shortly thereafter and immediately began to render aid to the suspect. Personnel from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, already on scene at the hospital, arrived quickly and transported him to the hospital.
Detectives from the FCPD Major Crimes Division have assumed primary responsibility for the criminal investigation. The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation, and the deputy will be placed on routine administrative leave.
