The trail bridge at Green Spring Gardens is being replaced by the Fairfax County Park Authority. The three-month construction project will start within the next few weeks.
The existing bridge needs to be replaced because of stream erosion. The new bridge will be longer and its supports will be wider apart. The $300,000 project consists of removing the existing pedestrian bridge, installing a new 45-foot single-span steel frame bridge, and stream bank restoration.
The cost is covered by storm damage mitigation funding as a result of severe damage to the existing bridge abutments that occurred during Tropical Storm Lee in the fall of 2011.
Portions of the existing trails in Green Spring Gardens will be closed during the project. Construction access to the site will be from the main parking area at Green Spring. Residents should expect occasional construction traffic entering the parking lot from Braddock Road. The contractor is McGee Civil Construction LLC.
