The Cross County Trail near Americana Park.

The Fairfax County Park Authority is planning to pave a 7,800-foot stretch of the Cross County Trail in Wakefield Park between Braddock Road and Americana Park in Annandale.

The public is invited to a meeting on the project Oct. 15, 7 p.m., at Kings Glen Elementary School, 5401 Danbury Forest Drive, Springfield.

The paved trail will follow the existing gravel path, will be eight to 10 feet wide, and “will be designed to minimize the impact to natural resources contained within the park,” states an announcement from the Park Authority. Environmental and historic resource professionals will be involved in the design process.

The trail is one of the most heavily used in the county. It needs to be paved because it floods after heavy rains, and soft-gravel trails are harder and more expensive to maintain, says project manager Bill Boston.

It will take about two years before construction could start. The meeting is scheduled for next month, because “we want to reach out to the public before the project is designed so we can incorporate public feedback into the project,” Boston says. “We want a trail everyone is happy with.”
