The Annandale Rotary Club has been supporting the needy and promoting positive values for half a century. In fact, the club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with a special dinner for current and past members June 26 at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC).

The club’s emphasis on community service is evident in its willingness to sign on as a sponsor of the Taste of Annandale, June 13 on Tom Davis Drive.

Every year, the Annandale Rotary Club hands out college scholarships, based on need, to local students who demonstrate academic achievement and community service. This spring, the club awarded scholarships (worth $2.500 or $5,000) to three Annandale High School seniors, two Falls Church High School students, one Woodson senior, three NVCC students, and one previous scholarship recipient.

Rotary is an international service organization with 1.3 million members and 32,000 clubs across the globe, said Bob Kahane, president-elect of the Annandale club at the group’s recent weekly meeting at the Jukebox Dineron Columbia Pike.

“The Rotary ideal emphasizes ethical business practices, and, our goal is to promote fellowship and help those in need at the local, national, and international levels,” says Kahane, who also happens to be an accomplished woodworker.

Rotarians apply a four-way test to determine if a proposed project is worthy of support: “Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? And will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

The Annandale Rotary Club supports Rotary International’s projects to eradicate polio, end world hunger, and through the ShelterBoxprogram, provide life-saving supplies to disaster victims and refugees.

The group also supports several local programs, including Annandale Christian Community for Action, and sponsors the Interact Club, a branch of Rotary for youths, at Annandale High School. Interact members organize the school’s annual Just World Festival.
