Between 2005 and 2030, the county expects the population of folks 50 and over to increase by 40 percent. The 70 and older population is projected to grow by a whopping 88 percent during that period.
The forums, hosted by the Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging, will explore ways to create a more livable community for older residents, focusing on housing, transportation, easy access to services, healthy lifestyles, and community engagement.
Two of the forums are in the Annandale area: June 24, 10 a.m.-noon, at Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church, and July 11, 9-11 a.m., at Ravensworth Baptist Church in Annandale. Register online or call 703/324-5411.
After the forums, the Commission on Aging will develop a new 50+ Action Plan.
Meanwhile, several communities are developing their own support systems to help older people stay in their homes. Residents of Lake Barcroft are invited to join the Lake Barcroft Village, a nonprofit organization that provides volunteers to help with light home maintenance and technology and rides to doctor appointments. The group also organizes social activities and provides a list of vetted home repair venders. The Aging in Place Committee of the Braddock District Council of Community Associations is exploring various options for better serving older residents.
